Cause - The cause was using custom XSL on a listview webpart using "Xsl Link" property. The customizations were applied but it broke the edit menu of the item (ECB).
Soltuion - Deploy your XSL in _layouts using a wsp solution package.

"Item is no longer available. it may have been deleted by another user. Click "OK" to refresh the Page." so this is what i get when trying to edit an item (via ECB menu). This came up all of a sudden and it was really hard to bebug as it was not a server side error. Thinking about all the Changes that happened on the server finally led us to the Cause of this error.
